How does a website actually make money? This question was posed to me by a new client who wanted to follow her passion for food. She understood that a web blog was a collection of journal-like entries, and she knew that writing articles on a professionally designed website was a good thing... but the answer still wasn't clear to her: How does web content transform into revenue for business? My explanation helped her understand, and I hope it will for you, too.
This particular client has a huge amount of energy and drive for her favorite topic: food. With this topic, there is no shortage of time for her to spend on it, or content for her to write about. She is excited about the idea of taking pictures, videos, and testing recipes that her site's visitor's would share through the website.
So clearly, there's value there.
So, she asked, how does all of this stuff make actual money?
There are actually a ton of ways this can make money, and I'll go over a few that I thought fit her situation. For one, online advertising is a great way to get traffic to any website. Online ads could be displayed at the edges of the website's content, either on the top of on the sides. And by joining advertising programs, you can make a small amount of money for each view of a site — and when the site's audience grows, you can make a lot of money on this alone.
Another route she could take is to charge for subscriptions. Anchored Web could install an extension that allows her to restrict some content from the public, unless they are willing to pay a monthly subscription for the privilege of seeing it.
Yet a third direction she could take is to create a hub of recipes for other cooks, and charge them a membership fee for being listed on her site. While this would make the most sense when there is a huge community already in place on the site, this could be a great way to make money from content on the site.
Once I outlined these basic ideas, we continued on in our consultation and found the best roadmap for success for her passion. No matter which path is chosen, marketing the website with social media and search engine optimization is a must.
